What are Dramatic Functions on StageAgent character pages?

On StageAgent, each character is assigned one or more dramatic functions to help you quickly understand their role in the story.

Dramatic functions describe how a character operates within the narrative—not just who they are, but what purpose they serve in driving the plot, shaping relationships, and supporting the overall structure of the show.

You’ll find dramatic functions listed on each character’s breakdown page.

🎭 How StageAgent classifies dramatic function

Each character can have up to three dramatic functions, depending on their complexity. These are selected based on how the character contributes to the story across the full script.

Our goal is to give you a quick, at-a-glance understanding of a character’s narrative role—useful for auditions, analysis, and performance preparation.

🎓 Why dramatic functions matter

Understanding dramatic function helps you:

  • Quickly grasp a character’s purpose in the story
  • Make stronger acting choices based on narrative role
  • Prepare for auditions by understanding how your character fits into the larger world
  • Analyze scripts more effectively
